Friday Freebie - House Without Books Cross Stitch Chart

The House Without Books cross stitch chart is today's Friday Freebie at ATD.  Hooray for freebies!

Anyone who knows me well knows that I LOVE books and I always have.  I have a sweet collection of reading certificates and achievements from school and the local library.  My mom saved them, along with my report cards but we won't talk about that.  The point is I was always reading something and I loved going to the library.  It was quiet and peaceful there and I loved the smell of the wooden bookcases and the books. Whenever I imagined my house when I grew up it had a fireplace with built in bookshelves on each side.  The books were bright, shiny, and colorful and the shelves were full.  If I closed my eyes I could smell the wood and the books and it was my happy place.  Of course, the shelves were about three stories tall and totally ridiculous but a little girl's dream has no boundaries.

Fast forward to 2015 and I remembered that funny wish I had as a little girl.  My colorful not so shiny and bright books were indeed sitting on bookshelves on either side of a fireplace.  They weren't three stories tall but I can live with that especially since I'm the one who has to dust them.  Anyway as I was looking at them and thinking of all of the books that I read to myself and to my sons, I remembered a favorite quote.

"A house without books is like a room without windows.  No man has a right to bring up his children without surrounding them with books, if he has the means to buy them.  It is wrong to his family.  He cheats them!  Children learn to read by being in the presence of books.  The love of knowledge comes with reading and grows upon it."

― Horace Mann, Life and Works of Horace Mann Volume 3

I knew I had to come up with a simple pattern using the first part of this quote.  I stitched it within the week and it has lived among my books since then.  I smile every time I see it as it reminds me of a lifelong love of books and how I've shared that with my children and I hope they share it with theirs.

I hope you enjoy stitching House Without Books.  I would love to see your progress and finishes.  You can tag me on IG @angelatackettdesigns and #atdpatterns. As always if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at
